What is bursitis and tendonitis?
Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled cushions around a joint. Tendonitis is inflammation of the cords that connect muscle to bone. Both usually come from overuse or repetitive movement and cause pain and swelling near a joint.
Common symptoms
- Pain over a joint, often the shoulder, elbow, hip or knee
- Swelling or tenderness around the joint
- Pain that worsens with movement or pressure
- Sometimes a low fever
How we treat it at AfterOurs
A provider examines the joint and recommends rest, ice, compression and elevation, and anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen. Prescription anti-inflammatories may be used if needed. Physical therapy is often suggested for recovery.
When to come in
Come in if joint pain or swelling does not improve with rest, or if you also have a fever.
