Lice & Scabies

Head lice and scabies are common, very itchy infestations spread by close contact. Lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and lay eggs (nits) on the hair. Scabies is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows into the skin. Neither is a sign of poor hygiene, and both are treatable.

What is lice & scabies?

Head lice and scabies are common, very itchy infestations spread by close contact. Lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and lay eggs (nits) on the hair. Scabies is caused by a microscopic mite that burrows into the skin. Neither is a sign of poor hygiene, and both are treatable.

Common symptoms

  • Intense itching, often worse at night
  • Tiny eggs stuck to hairs near the scalp, or moving lice
  • Small bumps or a pimple-like rash between the fingers, or on the wrists, waist or groin
  • Thin, wavy lines on the skin (burrows)
  • Sores from scratching

How we treat it at AfterOurs

A provider examines the scalp or skin to confirm what it is and prescribes the right treatment: a medicated lotion, shampoo or cream, or for scabies sometimes a pill. We'll explain how to treat close contacts at the same time, how to wash bedding and clothes, and when to repeat the treatment. Infected scratches are treated too.

When to come in

Come in, or book a telehealth visit, for itching that keeps you up at night, a rash spreading to others in your home, or lice that an over-the-counter treatment didn't clear. Pubic lice are treated here too, and STI testing can be done at the same visit.
