What is mastitis (breast infection)?

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue. It is most common in the first months of breastfeeding, when milk builds up in part of the breast, and it can turn into an infection with a painful, warm, red area and flu-like symptoms. It can also happen when you are not breastfeeding.

Common symptoms

  • A tender, warm, swollen area of the breast
  • Redness, sometimes in a wedge shape
  • Pain or burning while breastfeeding
  • Fever and chills
  • Body aches and feeling run down

How we treat it at AfterOurs

A provider examines the breast for infection or a pocket of pus (an abscess). Treatment includes rest, fluids, cold compresses, pain relief that is safe while breastfeeding, and antibiotics when infection is likely. In most cases you can and should keep breastfeeding or pumping as usual. If an abscess is suspected, we'll arrange an ultrasound and drainage.

When to come in

Come in, or book a telehealth visit, if breast pain and redness come with fever or flu-like symptoms, or haven't improved after a day of home care. Breast redness or swelling when you are not breastfeeding should always be checked.
