What is mono (mononucleosis)?

Mono is a viral infection, usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, that spreads through saliva, which is why it's nicknamed "the kissing disease." It is most common in teens and young adults and causes a bad sore throat, fever, swollen glands and tiredness that can last for weeks.

Common symptoms

  • A severe sore throat, sometimes with white patches on the tonsils
  • Fever
  • Swollen glands in the neck and armpits
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Headache and body aches
  • Pain under the left ribs from a swollen spleen

How we treat it at AfterOurs

A provider examines your throat, glands and belly and can run a rapid mono test in the clinic, often alongside a strep test, because the two look alike. Antibiotics don't treat mono; treatment is rest, fluids, and relief for pain and fever. Because mono can swell the spleen, we'll tell you how long to avoid contact sports and heavy lifting.

When to come in

Come in for a sore throat with fever and swollen glands, or tiredness that isn't lifting after a cold-like illness. Go to the ER for trouble breathing or swallowing, or sudden sharp pain in the upper left belly.
