What is mpox (monkeypox)?

Mpox is a viral infection that causes a rash of painful bumps and blisters, often with fever and swollen glands. It spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, including sex, and through contact with contaminated bedding or clothing. Most people recover in two to four weeks.

Common symptoms

  • A rash or sores that turn into blisters, then scab over
  • Sores on the genitals, anus, mouth, hands or face
  • Fever and chills
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Headache, muscle aches and exhaustion

How we treat it at AfterOurs

A provider examines the rash and asks about recent close contacts. A swab of a sore can be sent to the lab to test for mpox, and testing for other STIs is often done at the same visit. Treatment is mainly pain relief and skin care while you recover, and we'll explain how to avoid passing it on. The mpox vaccine is recommended for people at higher risk; ask us where to get it.

When to come in

Come in for a new, unexplained rash with blisters or sores, especially after close contact with someone who has mpox. Cover the sores and wear a mask when you arrive.
