What is pelvic pain in non-pregnant women?
Pelvic pain is pain in the lower belly or pelvis. In women who are not pregnant it has many causes, including period cramps, urinary or vaginal infections, sexually transmitted infections, ovarian or uterine problems and constipation. Mild pain often settles with simple treatment, but new or severe pain needs evaluation.
Common symptoms
- Aching or cramping in the lower belly
- Pain on one or both sides of the pelvis
- Pain with periods
- Burning with urination
- Unusual vaginal discharge
How we treat it at AfterOurs
A provider takes a history and examines you, and may check urine or other tests. Mild pain is often managed with ibuprofen or other pain medicine, heat and rest. If an infection is found, antibiotics are prescribed. Pain that does not improve may need further testing.
When to come in
Come in the same day for new lower belly or pelvic pain so serious causes can be ruled out. Go to the ER for severe or sudden pain.
