Tooth Pain & Dental Infections

Tooth pain can come from a cavity, a cracked tooth, irritated gums, or an infection at the root of a tooth (a dental abscess). Urgent care can't fill or pull teeth, but we can treat the pain and an infection until you can see a dentist, which matters when it flares up at night or on a weekend.

What is tooth pain & dental infections?

Tooth pain can come from a cavity, a cracked tooth, irritated gums, or an infection at the root of a tooth (a dental abscess). Urgent care can't fill or pull teeth, but we can treat the pain and an infection until you can see a dentist, which matters when it flares up at night or on a weekend.

Common symptoms

  • Throbbing or sharp pain in a tooth or the jaw
  • Pain when chewing, or with hot and cold
  • Swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw
  • A bad taste or pus near the tooth
  • Fever along with tooth pain

How we treat it at AfterOurs

A provider examines your mouth, face and neck for swelling and signs of infection. If there is an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed, and we'll recommend safe pain relief. We'll also tell you how soon you need a dentist, who can fix the cause.

When to come in

Come in, or book a telehealth visit, for a toothache with swelling or fever, or pain that keeps you up when your dentist isn't available. Go to the ER right away if swelling spreads toward your eye or neck, or makes it hard to breathe or swallow.
