If you're applying for or renewing a Denver merchant guard (security officer) license, a physical exam is part of the process. AfterOurs does merchant guard physicals at all four metro Denver clinics for a flat fee of $65, self-pay. The provider does a focused exam covering the licensing requirements and completes the required form at the visit.

What is a merchant guard physical?

"Merchant guard" is Denver's term for a licensed security officer. The license is a Denver license, so the medical requirements are the ones on the form that comes with your Denver application, rather than a general Colorado standard. If you work outside Denver, check with the city or your employer whether a license and physical are needed there.

The physical is a short, focused exam. The provider reviews your health history and examines you against what the licensing form asks for, then completes and signs the form. It is not a full check-up and doesn't replace care from your own doctor.

What to bring

  • The medical form from your merchant guard license application or renewal packet, printed so the provider can sign it. Read through it first and fill in any sections meant for you.
  • A photo ID, such as your driver's license.
  • Glasses or contact lenses, if you wear them.
  • A list of your medicines and any ongoing health conditions.
  • Records from your own doctor, if the form asks about a condition, surgery or injury.

If your employer has sent you with its own paperwork as well, bring that too and mention it when you check in.

How long does it take?

The exam itself is short. Your total time depends mostly on how busy the clinic is when you arrive. Booking online holds your place, and our clinics are open into the evening, which helps if you work day or swing shifts.

What if something comes up?

If the exam finds something that affects the form, the provider will explain what was found and what the next step is. That may mean follow-up with your own doctor before the form can be completed.

Call 911 or go to the ER if you have chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, a drooping face or slurred speech, or you faint, or if you have an injury on the job with heavy bleeding, a head injury with confusion or vomiting, or a possible broken bone with numbness or a limb that looks out of shape.

Is this the same as occupational medicine?

No. A merchant guard physical is something you can book yourself, at a flat fee. Our occupational medicine services, such as work-injury care and employer-arranged physicals and drug screens, require an employer contract set up in advance. If your security company wants to set that up, it can contact us through that page.

How much is a merchant guard physical?

A merchant guard physical at AfterOurs is a flat fee of $65, self-pay. The price is the same whether you walk in or book online. Treatment for any other problem at the same visit is a separate service. All our flat-fee prices are on the cost and insurance page.
